A member of the 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters shows off his recently issued Sharp’s rifle as he stands before a camp photographer at Falmouth, Va., in June or July 1862. The backdrop, flag and what is likely an indigenous yellow pine appear in other portraits of the 2nd from this period and location. Recruited from several Northern states in 1861 and commanded by Col. Hiram Berdan, the regiment would distinguish itself at Antietam, Gettysburg, The Wilderness and other battlefields. The fate of this man is not known.
